Keeping My Sanity- The Artist’s Way

Years ago I read Julia Camerons’ Book “The Artist’s Way” which inspired me to journal everyday. However, it has taken me years to finally establish a weekly artist date with myself as she recommends…I have spent most of my life being too busy being busy.

Finally in the fall of 2010 it came about. Now every Wednesday morning at 11:30 A.M. I trek in my car to the north end of the city. I join a class of people…. most of whom are very pleasant seniors… the only ones not either working or in school at this time of day.

The occasional week I miss this date and I can really feel the difference in my psyche that week and in the level of my joy in life.

Every week a new artist comes in and does a demo. Then we attempt to paint something around the style of what he has demonstrated. At least that is the idea. It is a wonderful experience as weekly you get to try out new things and decide on what suits you and what doesn’t.

You also can get a feel for someone’s style and what it would be like to work with them. If it feels good you can check when they may have a class available.

Today’s class was with a man who did very loose fairly abstract work. I didn’t like his subject or end result, but I thoroughly appreciated how the result came about. In other words his style and technique. I would love to work with him. His style is very opposite to mine and it would bring about some well needed shifts in my methodology.

I haven’t painted any picasso’s yet or even produced much work as a result of this effort… just many experiments. But I am definitely learning a great deal about what I like and what I don’t.

New Years Resolutions – Getting Off The Fence

So here we are coming to the start of a New Year.  Have you started your New Years resolutions yet?

Are they random or laser focused.  Are your really clear on what your decisions should be?

The biggest challenge is that most people don’t make it past the 1st week.

Was it the wrong decision or just plane laziness or inaction that caused it.

Some tips on making a decision and getting off the fence to do it.

1/ Decide what the correct decision is and why you are making it.  If you want to lose weight simply for glamour reasons that may not be strong enough to keep you motivated.

So decide on a precise # of pounds, set a time frame but most of all know the real deeper reason for losing the weight.  A little internal checking will help you sort this out.  Maybe your doctor is concerned about your heart etc. and maybe you should be too.

2/What part of the decision concerns you most.  We all have things we are afraid of and we all gravitate to what is more pleasurable.

3/ Break down all the unpleasant parts into small chunks.  Figure out how you can overcome each of these.  Is it the daily treadmill exercise that scares you off, find ways to deal with it.

4/Face up to the fear and admit to it.  Fear and uncertainty are main factors in procrastination.

5/Talk to advisors who are experts in your area of concern or even friends or family members who have tackled such a problem . Ask for advice and support.

6/  Accept the stress of making the emotional decision.

7/ What will happen if you fail.  Step into the future and see the failure.  Look back at it from a distance and decide how you will handle or restructure from the failure.

8/ Take action. Start with baby steps.  Always remember nothing happens until something moves.  I think that is a book title but it applies here.

Always remember that the difference in success and failure is often just movement or simply showing up.  Until you show up nothing can change.  Action is the most important success habit of all when it comes to determining how your life will play out.

What Can You Accomplish In Five Years?

realtor_table

Thought For The Week

We greatly overestimate what we can accomplish in one year. But we greatly underestimate what we can accomplish in five years. * Peter Ferdinand Drucker

After many years of living I have discovered that life is often best lived with moments of looking backwards.

The challenge with looking backwards is that as humans we tend to look at what went wrong instead of what we have accomplished.

Particularly when we are young we tend to set goals that are mammoth and often difficult to achieve particularly on the short time lines that we expected. This often causes us to lose site of our Bigger Picture and let go of our dreams.

Right now I am in a huge process of change in my life again. Letting go of the big home and all the possessions and moving into much smaller space in order to free myself up to do what really counts and a bit of travelling to boot.

So in going through bits of 4 generations of stuff in this house I am looking backwards again.

Looking backwards here are some things that I have uncovered about my life.

In five years I was able to marry, buy a home and have a child or create a family.

In five years I was able to invest in a few properties, maintain and manage them and ultimately become a millionaire.

In five years I was able to build a sustainable business at least 80% based on repeat and referral customers.

In five years unfortunately, family members die and depart us and force us to face more change & challenges.

In five years marriages can come to an end and families can be split apart.

In five years health can change radically both for the worse and for the better. I could go on…..but you get the idea.

So what is important about all this? That life is a process and not an event.
That we have to stay the course for the long term.

That both good and bad will happen but in the end with reasonable management most things come out okay.
That we need to set big pictures and big goals but realize that things will shift along the way and we must make changes with the shifts.

That it won’t always be rosy and there will be some tears. And yet we survive and mostly thrive in the end.

Most important is that effort is often cumulative.

That one year builds on the next one.

That efforts pile up one on top of each other and before you know it something of substance has been created.
That substance may be financial, family a business success and ideally a little of all three.

Hope this Helps.

Five Great Cell Phone Tips

I bet you didn’t know you could do
Most of These With Your Cell Phone.
I sure didn’t.

Cellular phones seem to be one of the most used technology items over the past few years. It is very rare you know a person who doesn’t have a cell phone or hasn’t had one in the past,

Here are 5 great things you can do with your cell phone.

1/ One of the first things I discovered really interesting that could be done on my phone is when I was travelling over in Europe I didn’t know what their Emergency Number was. I discovered that if you type in 112 on your phone you would be given a worldwide Emergency Service.

This works perfect even when you are out of your networks coverage area. It will find a network that is working in the local zone and allow the call to be connected.

Now your probably thinking, what if my phone is locked and I am in such a panic I can’t even function to get it to unlock?

Don’t worry; this function will even work when your keypad locked. I’d say test this out, but you could be making a false emergency call so just remember this for your next vacation it may come in quite handy.

2/If you are really forgetful this will be useful.
Do you have a vehicle that has one of those fancy remote keyless entry options? Did you leave your keys in the vehicle and can’t get in?

Do you have an extra set with someone else? Well you are about to be amazed. Now you can stay with your vehicle while unlocking it.

Call the person who has your extra set of remote keyless entry keys, tell them to put the extra set to the phone pointing the signal to the microphone, turn your cellular phone towards your vehicle, press the unlock button, BAM!

Your vehicle is now unlocked.

Trust me this actually does work. I am one of those people that forget my keys in my vehicle all the time so this comes in quite handy. It doesn’t even matter how far away the other person is.

Now save yourself time trying to get someone to bring you your extra keys when they can just unlock your vehicle from home.

3/Don’t you hate it when you are in a middle of a conversation and your cell phone’s battery is getting real low?

This third useful thing will come in very handy especially if you need your phone for a short period of time till you can get it to a charger.

There is hidden battery power in your phone. Now you probably never even thought this was possible, but it is!

Simply type in the following into your cell phone “*3370#”, now your phone will then restart and when you turn it back on you’ll see that your cell phone’s battery has increased by approximately 50%.

This comes in real handy when you need a little extra charge to get you through a little longer till you get your cell phone onto its charger finally.

4/Are you always worried about having your cell phone stolen, but are not entirely sure where to get your serial number from for your phone.

I’ll explain to you how you can get your cell phone’s serial number. Keep this number in a safe place just in case your phone is ever actually stolen.

To get your serial number type in the following code into your phone ” *#06# “, once you type the code in a 15 digit number will display on your cell phone’s screen and you will now have your serial number.

Give your cellular phone service provider this code and they can block all access to it making the phone completely useless even if there is a swap out of the SIM card.
5 /Are you one of those people who always tend to be in desperate need of a phone number, but never have a phone book near you?
You probably tend to use the service 411 and always get charged, correct? Well stop!

No longer pay for your 411 calls that seem to be costing you $1.00+ per use.

Instead dial this number into your phone: (800) FREE-411 or (800) 373-3411. Works in the U.S. only.

You may still be charged your regular cellular phone minute charges, but that is much better then spending your regular cellular phone minute charges plus the $1.00 or more to get a phone number.

There you go Try these five interesting features out and see if they make your cell phone use more efficient.

Serendipity and the Law Of Attraction

What are you looking at Mr Squirrel?

Serendipity from www.answers.com =  The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident.

Funny thing has been happening lately.  My web associate Bruce Hughbanks in Texas of  a product currently known as  Blog Matrix Pro.  Bruce sold the original  Word Press Mass Installer to J.P. Shoefell and now it has been renamed.

Anyway Bruce,  really liked my visioning and goal setting system.  He was reading some private label products at the time and I said “Bruce, I have a much better system, let me show you mine”. After which he convinced me I should write it up.  At the 45 page point it had turned into a product. Which is where the serendipity and the universe kicked in.

All of a sudden everywhere I went friends and associates started handing me goal setting materials that they had worked with over the years.  Someone gave me a Dan Sullivan CD to listen to then our real estate broker who is just a pro coach handed us a few more sheets of paper from another source and so on.

Then I bumped into a Jack Canfield Book on Law of Attraction at Costco… yes I do tend to bump into books. As I read and listened I realized that they all agreed with my own thinking but some of them had clarified certain elements of language that I had been struggling with a little bit.

So I am about to dip back into my work and expand upon it taking it deeper.  Maybe this is actually meant to be a book and not just a Workbook.

But the point here is … this is how the Law of Attraction works. What I focused on is exactly what I have drawn towards me. The end result will just make my final book better.

Have a very attractive day.

Jack Canfield’s Key To Living the Law of Attraction

Ever since the movie “The Secret” came out everyone has been buzzing about the Law of Attraction and numerous books have been written on the subject.  Everyone seems to want to cash in on the phenomenon.

In this vane I was walking through our local Costco the other week checking out the book table and found a little tome written by Jack Canfield on the subject.  It is a quick read  but quite concise and describes how to live the Attraction Law much better than most.  So I would recommend grabbing a copy.  (As an aside here Costco has a very good book buyer and frankly my yearly savings alone on books are worth the price of the card.)

One however gets the sense that one of the primary purposes of the book is to get you to Jack’s  website to purchase his tools for working with the Law of Attraction which of course are priced a bit steeply and totally unnecessary.  You can just go to Homesense or even Wal Mart and pick up a couple of Journals for $5.-$6.00 a piece to create your vision book and your gratitude journal.“

Working with the gratitude journal and vision board or vision book will also be included in my new course on  Vision, Values and Achieving Your Goals which will be available on this site in a few weeks time so watch out for them.

Sharpening The Saw

One of the most important aspects of creating wealth is taking time off. Although my time is fully blocked and scheduled one of the biggest blocks is the area called Free time.  That’s not rest time or time for  me to re-coop, it’s time for me to have fun or sit and think.  Unstructured to myself with no one calling on me for obligatory functions.   Most of my best New Ideas generate from this time.

In keeping with that I was having a conversation yesterday with a colleague and client who started to wax on rhapsoically about the notion of a Yoga retreat in India.  I of course went into one of my rants about the minimum 20 hour journey to get there.

I am not the best of world travellers and have long decided that if it takes more than 12 hours to do it I either have to be staying for a month or I have to cruise there with my laptop in my cabin with internet connection so I can write.  Otherwise forget it.

I pointed my associate in the direction of some great Yoga retreats right here on the North American Side of the Planet.  Sivananda has a Yoga ranch in the Catskills in New York and an excellent retreat on Paradise Island in the Bahamas right down the beach from Club Med.  I remember some folks sneaking down the beach late at night for a little drinking and dancing.  Don’t tell the Yogi’s however.

You can find Sivananda at  Yoga Retreat  that link is for their ranch in New York  and this one will get you to their International Locations.  Another beautiful retreat centre in the northern hemisphere on 360 acres of rolling land with it’s own lake is Kripalu.  There are many more you can find at google.  However these two groups have been around for eons and are extremely reliable in terms of context and quality offered.

They can be booked by plane or a long leisurley train ride if you have the time .

My associate rushed off to book a more local adventure.

Clearing Out The Clutter

imgrht

Something’s going on out there. I have been noticing books in the stores and articles in newspapers, magazines and on the internet about people clearing out, cutting back and living simpler lives.

Having spent many years in real estate one of the things I am used to is walking in on people’s very cluttered lives.
I have often wondered how they can function with papers and hobbies absolutely piled high on every table, side table, the floor , in fact
every square inch of space.

We insist on making people de-clutter before listing a home for sale and the result for them is usually one of great relief plus the home looks great.

It seems to me that the stuff we own ends up owning us. That a larger house or better car & more stuff can’t guarantee us more happiness. In North America we appear to be having an orgy of consumption with everything disposable and quickly replaceable filling our homes and our landfills to overflowing.

Our homes are storage units rather than living spaces. We are threatened with all sorts of imaginary disasters such as SARS, Y2K, mad cow disease, avian flue and the list just goes on.

The movement I see afoot tells me that people are feeling overwhelmed and frustrated with it all. Many not knowing where to start with simplifying there lives.

To do this you must make a clear and simple choice. To work now to simplify and get balance back into your life. When stuff starts taking away from the quality of our lives, our home and our relationships it’s time for change.

It all starts in your home which is your foundation for your life. If you can hardly move around in it for “stuff” you can’t enter the world on a daily basis with a clear head. You need to be able to see the floor beneath you. The table needs to be clear. You need to be able to think, breathe and rest easily so that you can love and create well.

What you buy, what you value, your possessions are all a reflection of who you are. They affect your life, your relationships, career and future aspirations.

So start today to think about clearing out anything that does not enhance your life today or add to your future goals. Get some boxes or order a garbage bin for your driveway. Two years ago I did this exact thing, ordered what they call a half bin for the drive which a big garbage truck planted in my driveway. I spent a month filling it to the brim and then had them hall it all away.

The thing to ask of each item you want rid of is “ Does this contribute to the life I am hoping to achieve, or is it getting in the way of my vision.” This question does presume you have sat down and worked out your vision, your goals for your life and how you want things to look in the end. If your items aren’t helping you to meet those goals consider saying goodbye to them.

On a final note the English architect William Morris wrote that you shouldn’t have anything in your home that is not functional or beautiful… I would add to that “ or that you don’t love”.

Clutter can steal your life as it insidiously enters your home. Make it a rule of thumb that if you have not used something for a year to let it go. It won’t be a one step process you will have to purge and purge again but being able to think clearly, sleep well and love well will make it all worthwhile.

And good luck with your journey

Do You Search For Sameness or Can You Deal With Difference

Recently I have been looking for a new financial advisor to assist me with my portfolio.
I have been meeting with several people to try and clarify what I want and to ascertain who might do the best job for me. I look after my own real estate investments but find it challenging to watch it all.

I met with one lady at our local coffee shop. She had been highly recommended to me. It was very intersting to note her reaction when she discovered that we think very differently and that I didn’t just automatically agree with all of her assumptions. She quickly told me that I wouldn’t be a good client for her because we thought too differently.

Of course I was sitting there looking for exactly that. Someone who thought very differently from me. I was rather surprised given that she appeared to be a very good salesperson, but she could not account for difference or adjust to it quickly. A fatal flaw in the sales & client relationship game. Before listening carefully she was ready to cut me off because she didn’t have the training to see the value in the difference in personalities and money thinking.

There are many ways to achieve a goal and what matters is having the same core Values and a similar Vision. When dealing with successful people or anyone for that matter it’s important to make allowances for how other people operate or achieve their plans.

A great tool for learning this is the DISC profile. I am registered with Keller Williams Real Estate and the DISC is a profiling tool that we use regularly. There is no right or wrong, there is just who you are and how you fit into a group, team, or corporate structure.

Being a very high “D” or “Driver” I used to wonder why other people didn’t seem to get much done. An indepth understanding of the Disc really helped me to clarify how different types of people function and gave me much more insight into personalities and what to look for to build my team. There are several type of DISC profiling tools available but just doing your own and your partners DISC can help you to learn to interact with each other better. They are easy to locate on the web.

So, to keep this blog post short the end result is the young lady I met with is now putting a plan together for me to review. Maybe she decided she could be missing out on a good customer after all. We will find out in a few weeks time whether we can work together.

Don’t Forget To Write!

I stumbled across them in a closet the other day. There they were in envelopes discolored from age with addresses slightly faded from the passage of time. They were letters, shoeboxes full of them, all in neat little bundles tied up with faded ribbons.

As I looked through the box, there were many different kinds of letters. They spanned many years and even generations. There were letters written by my great-grandmother and other relatives who had died before I was born. It is a strange feeling to read the words written so long ago. It was much like taking a trip through time and visiting someone from the past.

A lot of the letters just carried information about daily activities, recent visitors, weather information, and who had gotten married or had a new baby. It is interesting to read them and see what took place in the days that were before my time. As I read them, I could visualize the activities and the people mentioned. I could sometimes follow months of letters written back and forth between people, making me almost feel like I was there.

For years, the main mode of communication was through letter writing. It was expected that anyone in the family that traveled, visited, or lived away from home would write letters to their immediate family and close friends. If family members neglected to write letters home to family and friends, they would often be reprimanded for their neglect. It was something that was expected. If someone wrote to you, then you were supposed to write back. It was a breach of etiquette not to do so.

“Don’t forget to write!” used to be the last admonishment most people heard when they waved good-bye as they left home.

Letters used to be written daily to sweethearts and to those who were separated due to college, employment, or perhaps because of war. As new methods of communication became available, such as the telegraph and telephone, most of them were still too new and expensive for the majority of people to use on a daily basis so they were used for important business or emergencies.

Our predecessors had many rules and guidelines for writing letters. Some of the rules depended on the type of letter that was being written while others had to do with etiquette and courtesy. The main types of letters written were either business letters or friendly letters. Children were taught how to write letters in grade school and parents also assisted them in learning to write respectful letters using good manners.

Many of the rules seem strange or even funny to us these days but the rules were carefully followed by nearly everyone.

A few of the rules found in school books from the past were:
- Do not attempt a letter unless you have something to say.
- Do not use lined paper for a formal letter.
- Don’t write on a half-sheet of paper for the sake of economy
- Never use fancy colored inks. A black ink that flows smoothly should be used. Rusty brown ink is offensive to the eye.
- Do not conduct private correspondence on a postal card. It is almost considered an insult by some people to receive a postal card. They are very useful for business purposes, or for sending orders by mail, but for social correspondence are improper. It is not good manners to send personal notes that are open to inspection.
- Never write an anonymous letter. It is cowardly. The recipient of such a letter should quietly burn it. The man or woman who dares not sign his or her name is unworthy of notice.
- Address your superiors and elders with respect. Do not write flippantly to any one.
- Do not write a letter while in anger. You will surely say too much, which you will regret. Written words stand as living witnesses against you and cannot be recalled.
- Do not commit a secret to paper. You can never tell what use may be made of it, or into whose hands it may fall.
- Don’t erase misspelled words in letters of importance; recopy the entire letter
- Don’t use a postscript except in very friendly letters
- Don’t underline words
- Give every subject a separate paragraph
- Don’t refold the letter. Be sure to fold it correctly the first time.
- Don’t fill up margins with forgotten ideas and messages but instead add an extra sheet to the letter
- Read the letter over carefully before sending, correcting any error or doubtful statement.
Many people I have written to would quickly tell you that I have broken the very first rule! In addition, my girlfriends and I used to write to each other, trying to see who could write on the strangest materials. We sent letters back and forth on everything from the backsides of junk mail to paper napkins and toilet tissue.

These days, letter writing has become a very rare thing. Most people would rather pick up the telephone and talk or send a text message while others prefer to e-mail, fax, or instant message over the computer.

Instant communication is great, especially for emergencies and even to quickly hear the news of an engagement, a new baby, or some other exciting information. When my granddaughter was born, a picture was taken and sent by cell phone to her uncle in another state before she was even an hour old.

The problem with the instant communication that we have today is that most people don’t print out letters and keep them or even save them in files or on CDs. There are a lot of notes and letters that will be lost because they have simply been deleted.

Even though we can strive to keep our letters on computer files or CDs, there really is something special to be said for that personal letter that is written in one’s own handwriting. Most people probably don’t think of it as a treasure to keep at the time the letter is written or received but years later those letters from your mother, sister, or friend become more valuable to you, especially when those people are no longer living. Not only do you have a copy of their words and thoughts but also an image of their own handwriting.

There are few people who probably sit down and write long letters to anyone these days. What we call letters today are little more than notes jotted down in comparison to the time, thought, and effort that used to be put into a hand written letter.

It is amazing to us today to think that everything from a personal letter to lengthy books and volumes were one time started by dipping a pen in ink and putting thoughts on paper and it took a considerable amount of time.

Maybe it’s time that I dig out that box of stationery and write letters to my children. Who knows, maybe they will keep them in a shoebox in their closets. Generations from now, someone might open the box and say something like: “Wow, I found letters from a really strange ancestor, a real black sheep in the family, who wrote letters back in 2007. She must have been either computer illiterate or too poor to buy one.”

On second thought, maybe I better save some of them on CDs too. I think they will fit in a shoebox and maybe I can tie them up in bundles with some ribbon.
I believe I have some nice pink ribbon that should fade very nicely.

Well, good-bye for now and…

“Don’t forget to write!”
